Rasa presents "Shades Of Brown" written and performed by Rani Moorthy and directed by Linda Marlowe

Shades of Brown Image.jpgRasa will be taking Shades of Brown on tour in the UK October / November 2008

Can one person’s healthy glow be another’s social stigma?
Comic, bold and deeply moving, this thought provoking one-woman show looks at the tangled subject of skin pigmentation and how to fit into ones own community.
Around the globe money and time is poured into tanning or bleaching. From a South African albino who wonders what Mandela would do, to a skin-bleaching Indian bride angry at Shilpa Shetty, Rani Moorthy, with her celebrated mix of warm and powerful story telling, transforms into funny and poignant characters who share a kinship through the one thing they cannot hide or hide from - their skin.

Shades of Brown is directed by Linda Marlowe, who also directed Rani Moorthy’s international hit show Curry Tales. Whatever shade of brown you are or want to be this play will get under the skin.

‘**** An incomparable story teller…Moorthy is so sumptuously watchable that its easy to forget there is only one of her on stage’ The Guardian
‘A piece of intelligent, engaging and provocative theatre. Frequently comedic, its central message lingers long after the curtain.’

The tour takes Rasa to London, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Halifax, Bracknell, Southampton, Banbury, Crawley, Luton, Colchester and Plymouth.

UK TOUR 2009 - This new production of UP AGAINST THE WALL premieres at The Octagon Theatre, Bolton from Thursday 29 January to Saturday 28 February 2009, prior to a national tour (further dates to be announced).

'A show-biz parody with gorgeously cheesy costumes and abundant hits'
DAILY MAIL

We are delighted to announce our new production, UP AGAINST THE WALL – a 70’s funk, ‘blaxploitation’ musical comedy, co-produced with The Octagon Theatre, Bolton.

Henry is the leader of The Funkaholics, a band full of afros, flares and medallions, performing all the great funk and soul songs of the blaxploitation era – from Shaft to Superfly; Sex Machine to Carwash.
An outrageous and shameless performer, Henry is superbly supported onstage by his lifelong friend Courtenay, the obligatory three “chicks” backing singers, and a badassss funk band. An evening with the Funkaholics is one truly Funktastic experience.
But when times are hard you just have to follow the funk wherever it takes you. So when the opportunity of a tour of Germany coincides with one of his “chicks” walking out on him, Henry auditions a replacement – simple enough. But this new girl, Gloria, is good… maybe too good.
A night of sexy, sassy 70’s retro complete with a LIVE band on-stage, this badassss musical comedy will have you laughing AND dancing in the aisles.

This new production of UP AGAINST THE WALL premieres at The Octagon Theatre, Bolton from Thursday 29 January to Saturday 28 February 2009, prior to a national tour (further dates to be announced).

Extreme entertainment, daring actions, flying emotions, accusations and counter accusations, denials and re affirmations is what audiences can expect in this no-holds-barred show which takes a multi-media approach to theatre by a new theatre director Patience Gamuchirai Tawengwa. The Loupe is a combination of experience (Tafadzwa Muzondo) and young blood (John Pfumojena) in its two man cast, a combination of different art forms in style and a combination of a new generation of theatre ideas in direction.
The director of the show, Patience Tawengwa, promises the audience entertainment at its best. “Cutting edge entertainment is what can be expected in this production which stretched me; I also realized that theatre directing is just as challenging as film work. It’s been an exciting experience where I sometimes had to step back to learn from my team and I should say the production owes a lot to the collaborative spirit and effort by the entire team” said Tawengwa.
Patience Tawengwa is a short film director-cum-theatre director whose short film “The Return” received an award for the best actress at ZIFF 2007. She is also an alumni of the prestigious Berlinale Talent Campus which is hosted annually in Berlin, Germany and is dubbed a “creative summit for up and coming filmmakers.” She was selected to attend the talent campus in February 2008.
Written by Mandisi Gobodi an acclaimed stage and screenplay writer, directed by Patience Tawengwa assisted by Lloyd Nyikadzino, Featuring Tafadzwa Muzondo and John Pfumojena, with Set design by Josh Changa, Audio-visuals by Charles Mutengwa, Live sound by Brezhnev Guveya.

“Loupe” shows at Theatre in the Park from 10-25 July 2008 and tickets are available at $25billion for the lunch time slot at 1.00pm with a complementary sandwich and $20 billion for the evening slot at 5.50pm. AFRIKOKOA @ BIG CHILL HOUSE, Kings Cross

SUNDAY 20th JULY 2008 6pm to 12am - FREE ENTRY

AFRIKOKOA brings the positive and energetic and soulful vibes with its next live session at the Big Chill House, 257-259 Pentonville Road, King’s Cross, London, N1 9NL on SUNDAY 20th July 2008, Kings Cross Northern Line and Thames Link, Next door to Thames link and Scala.

In fitting style and mood we have the great fortune to have playing live one of our favourite performers, soul brother number one, Randolph Matthews. Those of you that have been to previous Afrikokoa events would surely have witnessed the blessed golden vocals and evocative soulful organic vibes of this singer/songwriter, who independently recorded his sophomore album on Documented records. On this occasion he will be accompanied by drums, guitars and percussion. His music is an evolving journey, a constant search for vocal freedom and uninhibited expression captured in the moment. Sure, you’ll hear echoes of Marvin, Jon Lucien and Shuggie Otis, influences in the true sense, never derivative, but also a unique, free-flowing spontaneity that takes in traditional song structures as much as impulsive, rhythmic breathing and passages sung in tongues.

Resident DJ AJ Kwame (Runaways) and special guest DJ Mo-Laudi will explore the universal sounds of new and old Afro-musical fusions from Afro-Jazz, Soul, Funk, Afrobeat, Brazilian, Afro Hip-Hop to Hip-Life, Afro-house, Broken Beat to Dubstep, Bashment and MashUps.

Artistic works will be provided by Erin Sorenson.

Natural beauty stall by the Hairoine with a full range of exquisite, homemade natural hair and beauty products such as hair oils, body butters, lotions, body splashes and hair consulations that can be booked on the day!

The programme runs on till Autumn, and the next screenings are:

Sunday 29 June

Mobutu King of Zaire Dir: Thierry Michel | Zaire/Belgium | 1999 | 135mins. A comprehensively researched documentary history of the Congolese dictator who would be God, from his Stalin-like seizure and consolidation of power in the newly independent nation, through three decades of increasing corruption, brutality and megalomania, to his slightly shambolic fall from power in 1997.

Sunday 6 July

Munyurangabo Dir: Lee Isaac Chung | Cast: Jeff Rutagengwa, Eric Ndorunkundiye | Rwanda/USA | 2007 | 98mins. This exquisitely delicate debut feature is is the first narrative film made in the Kinyarwanda language. It is a tense odyssey of two teenage friends, Sangwa, a Hutu, and Ngabo, a Tutsi, set after the brutal Rwandan genocide, which left almost a million dead.

… coming this autumn Africa at the Pictures - Independence Days

28 November- 7 December 2008 at selected venues in London.

Independence Days is a reflection on African independence and freedom in producing films. African cinema came into being in the 1960s as a child of African independence. Many countries freed themselves from European colonial rule in the 1960s and it was only then that some Africans began to participate in film production.
