UK Arts International and Quaternaire in association with The Barbican, Warwick Arts Centre and the Puppet Centre Trust present Handspring Puppet Company's
Woyzeck on the Highveld
Throughout 2011
Middle to large scale
Woyzeck on the Highveld is an adaptation of German writer, Georg Büchner's famous play of jealousy, murder and the struggle of an ordinary man against an uncaring society, which eventually destroys him. Büchner's Woyzeck is a German soldier in 1800s, whereas in this version, Woyzeck is a migrant worker in 1950s Johannesburg, a landscape of barren industrialisation. The production brings together rod-manipulated puppets and animated film to graphically illustrate Woyzeck's tortured mind as he tries to make sense of his external circumstances.
The production originally opened in 1992 and has toured throughout Europe, the USA and Australia making it Handspring’s most widely travelled theatre production. The show received the Vita Award for Production of the Year of a New South African Play in its opening year.
After some time away it is back by popular demand!
“A captivating show” - The New York Times
“They look like actual human beings in miniature, reflecting perfectly each character’s role in the play” - The Australian Stage
“This is a production which astounds you with its originality, both in conception and in exposition” - Mayfest Glasgow
