Perry Henzell’s film, which ignited the worldwide reggae revolution and launched Jimmy Cliff on the road to international stardom, explodes on stage in this thrilling production.
Country-boy Ivan leaves home in the Jamaican countryside and travels to Kingston, his head full of songs that he hopes will earn him fame and fortune. But fortune is hard to find as Ivan is ripped off by shady record producers and corrupt cops. He does eventually find the fame he craves – but for all the wrong reasons.
The Harder They Come features all the songs from the film’s blazing soundtrack, including: You Can Get It If You Really Want, Many Rivers To Cross, By The Rivers of Babylon, and, of course, The Harder They Come.
First produced at Theatre Royal Stratford East in London, The Harder They Come has gone from strength to strength, playing for extensive runs in Miami and Toronto and at The Playhouse Theatre in London’s West End.
"Terrific…deserves to run for longer than the rivers of Babylon." - The Guardian
"By the end, nearly everyone is dancing in the aisles…you’ll want to hear it over and over again." - Daily Mail
"It’s impossible to leave this show without a big grin on your face…you’ll be tapping your toes before you know it." - The Sunday Times
"Kerry Michael’s superb production faithfully distils not just the movie’s music and characters, but also, somehow, its soul." - Evening Standard
