Out of Bounds

Spring 2006

Out of BoundsOut of Bounds is about Lal and his family, Indians growing up in a township on the outskirts of Durban, both during and after apartheid.

In a world where each racial group is rigidly defined and separated from each other in an isolated social pyramid, it tells of the trials and tribulations as well as the joys and humiliations of growing up in a working class family in KwaZulu Natal.

While the plight of Black South Africans suffering under apartheid has been well-documented, that of South African Indians has been barely touched on. Out of Bounds tells their story.

“It is a South African play ... of the many powerful and important stories we need to tell, not to bridge gaps or bring togetherness, but just to help understand ourselves.” Sunday World
