Nothing But The Truth
Throughout 2008 on request
Since its premiere at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2002, Nothing But The Truth has toured to some of the world's most prestigious venues, including the Sydney Opera House, and the Lincoln Center in New York.
John Kani's most recent play is a family drama that revolves around an ageing father, his dutiful daughter, and his London born niece. It is a play about life, examining family secrets, sibling rivalry, exile, the past, memory and reconciliation.
A father's middle-class aspirations are betrayed at the very moment when democracy promises they might be realised; a young idealist daughter plays an active role as campaigner and apologist for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission; and a grieving niece returns to South Africa from London to bury the cremated ashes of her exiled anti-apartheid activist father.
Nothing But The Truth is an exploration of the strained and complex relationship between those who remained in South Africa to lead the struggle against apartheid and those who returned victoriously after living in exile.
"A deeply felt portrait that delicately weaves the extraordinary and the ordinary in its characters' lives." - The New York Times
"Nothing But The Truth is pure, powerful, enthralling theatre and...strikes just the right balance between drama and healthy helpings of humour." - The Citizen (South Africa)
