Looking for Yoghurt

Spring 2011

 Directed By: Peter Wynne-Willson

Small to middle scale

Age Recommendation: 6+

Looking for Yoghurt is a yearlong collaboration between artists from Korea, Japan and the UK, bringing their skills, cultures and languages together. Simple but inventive staging, humour, live music and outstanding physical performances characterise this moving original story inspired by the wisdom of children, and following three young people in their battle against the fear of monsters and their search for a brighter future.

In a modern city, scarred by constant construction and reconstruction, a small Korean girl is looking for her friend, a stray cat called Yoghurt. She meets two other children, both strangers and both from different cultures to her own. As the sun goes down their fear of monsters and concerns for a broken world take them on an extraordinary adventure in which they dig for Brazil and climb above the moon. It is an encounter which will change their lives forever ...

There is little language, and the characters build up a means of communicating using action, gesture and their imagination. There is enough repetition to enable the play to be performed in the same form in all countries.
The style is physical, with a set which is symbolic. There is a musician, outside the action, providing a live soundtrack to the piece. The actors also contribute with live music, rhythm and song.

"Looking For Yoghurt has the kind of invention that a lot of adult productions are severely lacking" The Metro

"The three performers are all highly engaging" The Guardian

"Yoghurt Rocks!" Year 6, Reaside Junior School Birmingham
