Foreign Aids

2004

Foreign AidsHailed as an institution in his native South Africa, cross-dressing satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys is touring with three productions, Foreign Aids, Dekaffirnated and An Audience With An African Queen.

FOREIGN AIDS, his most recent work and seen at the Tricycle last summer, does for sex what DEKAFFIRNATED does for race. The piece exposes the horrors of the situation that all of Southern Africa now finds itself in, with AIDS having reached pandemic proportions. That satire and comedy can be born out of this situation is, in itself, something of an achievement and Pieter Dirk Uys shows his deep humanity and compassion in the way he finds the humour in sometimes horrific situations.

‘For Uys, satire is about defusing the threatening by exposing its absurdities. As long as the Rainbow Nation continues to provide him with this kind of material, Uys will be fighting for his country’s future for some time’ The Observer

PDU’s satire is right on target – and just as lethal even after all these years’
