Middle scale

Chief Zanenvula, a good man and respected chief of his tribe, has been refused entry into heaven. Distraught and uncomprehending, he calls on his ancestors to find the answer. Told to look back on his past, the Chief reviews his life and actions, and slowly understands how he has offended the spirit of Africa. What did he do, and how can he redeem himself?

Elephant is a spectacular collaboration between the Newcastle-based visual theatre company Dodgy Clutch and the world-renowned Market Theatre in Johannesburg. It has already been a huge success in South Africa and is now available for touring the UK.

Elephant brings together a multi-talented company of actors, dancers, story-tellers and musicians from the UK and South Africa in a production that uses elaborate body puppets, gauze screen effects and wonderful music to celebrate Ubuntu (humanity) through an enchanting exploration of the themes of captivity, freedom and redemption.

"Amazing puppets. Excellent acting. Elephant has it all and it's a heart-warming show too." - British Theatre Guide, *****

"lively, imaginative and uplifting" - The List

“Rough and ready, but with enough charm to stop a rhino”  - The Stage @ Edinburgh

“You should all go and see this and remember it. Ideally we would all be better people if we were confronted by more stories like this but the truth is Elephant is just a brilliant production” - Edinburghguide.com
