Dada Masilo presents

Romeo and Juliet

Throughout 2010

Creator: Dada Masilo

Middle scale

Based closely on Shakespeare's famous text, Masilo captures the youth and passion of the eponymous characters in this contemporary version of the Romeo and Juliet story, which is played out against the haunting and magical sounds of Bach and Vivaldi performed by Vanessa Mae and Nigel Kennedy.

Masilo's Romeo and Juliet, fuses classical ballet with contemporary dance, thus creating an undeniably fresh aesthetic and referring to both classic and modern ideas of love, in this age-old story, prejudice, ill timing, death and reconciliation.

After playing to sell out audiences at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, Romeo and Juliet, which was commissioned as part of her Standard Bank Young Artist Award was recently restaged in October 2009 at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town.

"Romeo and Juliet gives Dada Masilo an opportunity to display her electric dance repertoire; her inimitable sense of elegance spiced with an outrageous sexiness; her extravagant and intimate understanding of classical music and dance, and how far she can push the envelopes they respectively offer her; it is astonishing how she continues to surprise even her most loyal fans... You feel that if you take a breath, you might miss an element to this extraordinarily sophisticated piece."

"One of the star shows...at the National Arts Festival"

“The choreographer not only ignites the passions and dynamics of the 11 other dancers, but her depiction of Juliet is an incandescent embodiment of the original text and an inspired collage of music… South African classical ballet has been revitalised and reclaimed by a new wave of committed African dancers – that’s official!” The Star
