Farber Foundry presents
A Woman in Waiting
Based on the Life of Thembi Mtshali
Starring Thembi Mtshali
Directed by Yael Farber
Thembi Mtshali celebrates the poignant history of three generations of resilient Zulu women from the era of apartheid to the present day.
This autobiographical piece from South Africa tells of a Zulu girl who spent her childhood apart from her parents, of the night raids in the townships, the massacre of the children in Soweto in 1976 and her eventual escape from a stifling regime.
Winner of an Edinburgh Fringe First Award and Sony Award for Best Radio Drama.
"A performance of astonishing passion from Thembi Mtshali, an actress of unique spirit who is possessed of a voice that could lift a small village off the ground, and certainly brought the audience to their feet." Sunday Times
"The relish with which the story of her life is told - from the undulating rhythms that permeate the piece; the themes of heritage, time and belonging that underpin it; and the sheer beauty of the language, which echoes around the simples, sparest of sets - is exhilerating, moving and, above all, life-affirming." The Guardian
"With Yael Farber as co-writer, Mtshali takes the format to new heights. Her achievements are second to none... her personality is enabled to propel her story... To judge from this middle of the week crowd's reactions, it will be standing ovations only." The Stage
