A Face Like Mine

2010

Directed By: Lara Foot-Netwon
Performed By: Asanda Phewa

A Face Like Mine explores the fragmented perceptions one black woman has of herself. Its creator, Asanda Phewa, is not shy of getting extremely intimate with the subject matter as she delves into the highly complex question of what makes up culture and identity. Is it possible to belong to a certain culture without knowing its traditions and language?

The play observes the super-subtle relations and tensions between black women and white men over space and time, as well as intra-black on black prejudices and how this informs one woman's opinions on her own femininity.

It is a lyrical and sensual sonnet that takes an honest look at how one woman dresses up self-worth every morning.

Renowned producer Lara Foot-Newton joined forces with Asanda Phewa, University of Cape Town's Best Theatre-Maker of 2008, to premiere A Face Like Mine at the Grahamstown Festival in 2009.

"Asanda Phewa seemed to peel off the layers of her skin to get to the heart of her story" Tonight
